Gastroscopy
The procedure uses a 10-foot long endoscope (camera), passed into the stomach via the nose. This is the only accurate way to diagnose stomach ulcers in horses. Ulcers are extremely common and can cause signs of colic, weight loss, poor performance, just to name a few.
Gastroscopy can also identify tumors, stomach impactions, and other abnormalities of the upper GI tract. This procedure requires the horse to be fasted for 12 hours and involves mild sedation. We provide gastroscopy at your farm.
Symptoms of Gastric Ulcers in the Horse
The horse is highly susceptible to ulcerative disease of the stomach which can lead to pain, discomfort, poor performance and colic. Symptoms of gastric ulcers vary and may include:
- Behavior changes: varying from crabbiness to explosiveness to nervousness
- Girthiness: or generalized reluctance to be groomed or touched or have the girth tightened
- Poor performance: symptoms may mimic or overlap with symptoms of back pain and include reluctance to lift through the back, difficulty cantering, sour attitude towards work
- Poor appetite: picky eating, bolting food then walking away from grain bucket
- Poor body condition/weight loss
- Chronic diarrhea
- Poor coat condition
- Grinding teeth
- Stereotypical behaviors: cribbing, weaving, stall walking
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an exceptional way to relieve your horse of many problems and maintain overall well being. Equine veterinary acupuncture is based on the theory from Traditional Chinese Medicine that horses contain different channels that allow energy to flow throughout their bodies. If any of these channels are blocked, energy can no longer flow properly, which can lead to muscle soreness, and eventually can cause more serious musculoskeletal issues or diseases. Acupuncture promotes natural healing by stimulating nerves, muscles, and connective tissue by inserting thin acupuncture needles at specific points on the body. The goal is to restore the free flow of energy, balance and function. It is well tolerated by most horses and provides a drug-free approach to address musculoskeletal pain that can enhance equine performance. This is particularly attractive for competitors who must adhere to show association-mandated prohibited substance policies.
